It’s okay to share about your life on facebook. That’s kind of the point – but watch your motivation. I see people all the time posting a list of reasons to feel sorry for them – or a list of all of the good things they do so that others can like them.

Sometimes – those motives are pretty obvious. Sometimes – you simply need to ask yourself a question or two before you post. Am I posting this for attention? Am I posting this so that someone will say something nice to me? Am I posting this because I want people to see how awesome I am?

It’s as simple as thinking before you hit submit.

It’s easy to want to be right. Especially when someone is wrong on the internet.
There is nothing wrong with a good discussion – but sometimes it’s easy to get sucked in to arguments and “flame wars” about things that REALLY don’t matter. Does it REALLY matter that Joe Schmoe voted for Obama and still like him?  Does it REALLY matter that someone wants $100 for a used cell phone that you think is only worth $50?

Stop arguing. It doesn’t build you up, them up – and it just wastes your time.

Whether it be your romantic relationships, friendships, or family relationships – griping about these online are not going to make the problems that you have better. It might make you feel better to vent – but it doesn’t make the situation better.

I have heard men gripe about their children on facebook – and I have to ask – what happens in ten years when that kid gets a facebook account, and looks back through his dad’s old posts? Ouch!

What about the damage that can be done by airing things that should be in private to the rest of the world?

Man up. Deal with your relationship issues privately and with the person that needs to hear it. Do you NEED to talk to someone else about the situation? If you do – do that privately and in real life as well.

Okay – that’s not fair. Girls shouldn’t do it either. But I’ll tell you this – it’s probably one of the least manly things a guy could do.

Let me encourage you NOT to complain about your job on facebook. Why? Because it WILL get back to your boss. If it doesn’t – keep in mind that most people get jobs from people they know. If your complaining is heard by Joe Schmoe – he’s not going to hire you if you ever want a job with him – because he knows you are a complainer!

If you have an issue with your job – fix it. Have a conversation with your boss, with your coworkers. Fix the problems that you can – and learn to DEAL WITH the problems you can’t fix. I can guarantee you complaining about it on a public forum will not fix it  – or help you deal with it.

Facebook may be full of people venting their feelings – but it needs one less. You.
